The R&A Unveils a New 'Last-Chance Qualifier' for The Open Championship 2026
Get ready for a thrilling addition to golf's most prestigious event! The R&A has announced a groundbreaking 'Last-Chance Qualifier' for The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2026. This innovative qualifier will inject an extra layer of excitement and drama into the season's final major.
On Monday, July 13, 12 players will have a last-minute chance to secure the final spot in the Championship. The qualifier will be a 12-player, 18-hole stroke-play event, teeing off between 7:30-8:03 a.m. local time. This is a strategic move by The R&A to enhance the fan experience, adding tension and intrigue to the early stages of the tournament.
"The Last-Chance Qualifier will be a thrilling spectacle for fans, showcasing high-quality, competitive golf as players battle for the final place in the Championship," said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A. "Every golfer who participates will have earned their spot, and we're excited to witness the drama unfold as players compete for their place in golf history."
The 12-player field will be determined through a fair and structured eligibility system, mirroring existing pathways into The Open.
Here's how the invitations will be extended:
- The top two non-exempt players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as of Monday, July 6.
- The runner-up in The Amateur Championship, provided they remain an amateur on July 13.
- Players who missed out on the playoff at Final Qualifying.
- Players who finished just behind those who secured a place in The Open at Final Qualifying.
- Players who were tied for a qualifying place in Open Qualifying Series events (excluding Scotland) but missed out due to their OWGR ranking.
Due to the high number of eligible golfers, invitations will be offered based on exemption categories until the field reaches 12. A reserve list will follow the same sequence, ensuring a fair process.
The qualifier also impacts the tournament's reserve list. The first two reserves will retain their status until the full field starts play on Thursday. Remaining reserve positions will be assigned based on the Last-Chance Qualifier's finishing order, with OWGR rankings as a tiebreaker unless a playoff determines the final qualifying spot.
Players will be notified of their eligibility, with most confirmations expected on July 1, and additional spots finalized after the July 6 OWGR release. This new qualifier will kickstart the excitement as The Open Championship returns to the historic Royal Birkdale, where Jordan Spieth claimed his third major in 2017.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season's final major unfolds! Will your favorite golfer make it through this new qualifier? We can't wait to see the drama unfold!
