Lacey and Larkin: Founders of the Frontera Fund
President Trump is the first president to make controversial statements and declarations at the beginning of his term. His term has been characterized by numerous cases that have evoked diverse opinions. His stance on immigration is one those which have evoked controversy among communities living in the country.
Trump has been a longtime supporter of anti-immigration policies, and the trend seems to have followed him into the White House. His conduct is still one that shows he has zero tolerance for immigration. Some of the steps and utterances he has made regarding this topic have caused controversy all over the world.
Trump has called for blanket condemnation of people from certain Muslim countries and third world countries. To further show that he does not support immigration to the United States, he gave a pardon to one of the rogue sheriffs who tortured and persecuted immigrants in his county. Joe Arpaio, a former sheriff of Maricopa County, did not allow undocumented immigrants to live in his county. However, it is the manner in which he evicted them from the county that caused jitters among the people. He was aggressive when dealing with these immigrants. He even initiated jails top handle the immigrants he was arresting.
Due to the proximity of Maricopa County to the southern border of Mexico, there was a large number of immigrants who had crossed into the United States. Most of them remained undocumented, meaning that they were illegally in the country. These are the people that Arpaio mainly targeted, although, in the process, many legal immigrants were harassed by his officers. Joe Arpaio’s tenure as a sheriff lasted for 24 years. His service was cut short after failing to win re-election for the seventh time. It was after the failure that he was taken back to court to answer to charges of racial profiling. He was found guilty and was to be sentenced. He was, however, lucky to be given a pardon by President Trump which ensured that he never spent a day in jail.
The pardon of Joe Arpaio was disgusting to many people in the United States. The action taken by Trump was condemned by human and civil rights defenders in the country.
They described the move as a travesty of justice since the hundreds of innocent immigrants murdered and tortured by Arpaio will never get justice. A punishment for Arpaio would have served as an excellent example that racial profiling and other cases of human rights discrimination are not tolerated in the United States.
