Larkin and Lacey: Making Arizona a Better Place to Live
Author Stephen Lemons has recently published an article on the Times New Phoenix’s website entitled “The Enduring Sins of Joe Arpaio Joe: Newspapermen Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Speak out in Response to Donald Trump’s Pardon of America’s Worst Sheriff”.
This article discusses the recent pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio has maintained quite the reputation since he first took office and has also squared off with the Times New Phoenix, and its creators, multiple times. It seems that once again Arpaio has found a way to escape justice for his crimes.
Cofounders of the Times New Phoenix Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have been reporting on Arpaio’s office from the very beginning. Arpaio originally became notorious for his “tent cities”, and open jail where prisoners were served below average meals and subjected to inhumane temperatures. The corrupt Sheriff billed it as a solution to prison overcrowding, he did not see the prisoners as human beings.
The same can be said for his views on the migrant population. He was known to frequently harass members of that group and engage in almost constant racial profiling. A class-action lawsuit concluded in 2007 required Arpaio and the Maricopa County Police Department to change the way that they dealt with this population.
They were expected to make sweeping changes and report to a court monitor. Unfortunately for Arpaio, he did not feel as though it was something he should take seriously, and he was found to be in contempt.
Larkin and Lacey know what kind of man Arpaio is. In 2007 they had their own run-in with him which resulted in their imprisonment. After a huge public outcry, they were released, Arpaio originally believed he could arrest them because they published something about a future grand jury hearing into their paper.
He was not within the parameters of the law when he did this and thankfully the men were released. After being released to themselves, they also filed a lawsuit against Maricopa County and won $3.75 million.
Larkin and Lacey have used this money to found a fund that will help the migrant population located in Arizona.
The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund marks the beginning of a new age in Arizona, one where everyone deserves respect regardless of their national heritage.
The people that have migrated to Arizona have done so in hopes of a better life and funds like this one will continue to support them. Larkin and Lacey’s fund helps programs that provide immigrants with job-training, housing resources, and legal advice.
They work with families that are here legally and illegally. They even work with people who have been jailed, to see if their incarceration is legal. With a sheriff like Arpaio, it is important to take these things into consideration.
While Larkin and Lacey are known for creating a newspaper giant, they are creating a new legacy with their fund. This legacy will continue to impact generations to come as they help make Arizona a better place to live.
